Which engine oil does your bike or scooter need?
Most riders pick engine oil the same way: they ask the mechanic, or they buy whatever the shop hands over. That works until it does not, and the failure is usually a slipping clutch or an engine that wears faster than it should.
Your bike already told you what it wants. It is in the manual, and often on a sticker near the filler cap. This guide explains how to read that instruction, and what the common categories of Indian two-wheeler generally ask for.
One rule before anything else: your owner’s manual beats this page. Specifications change between model years even when the bike looks identical. Everything below is the usual case, not a substitute for the book that came with your vehicle.
The two numbers and the two codes
Every oil pack carries four pieces of information that matter.
Viscosity, like 10W-30 or 15W-50. The first number with the W is how easily the oil flows cold. The second is how much film it holds when hot. Smaller engines with tight tolerances generally want lighter grades. Bigger, harder working engines want heavier ones.
API grade, like SL, SM or SN. This runs alphabetically and later is newer. If your manual says API SL or above, then SM and SN both clear that bar.
The JASO code, MA, MA2 or MB. This is the one most riders never look at, and the one that causes actual damage.
Type, mineral, semi synthetic or fully synthetic. This mostly affects how long the oil lasts rather than whether it protects.
JASO, the code that decides whether your clutch survives
Nearly every geared motorcycle in India uses a wet clutch. The clutch plates sit inside the engine, sharing oil with everything else. Most automatic scooters do not: they use a CVT with a dry centrifugal clutch, so the oil never touches the clutch surfaces.
That single difference splits two-wheeler oil into two incompatible families.
JASO MA and MA2 are for wet clutches. They are formulated so the plates can still grip. MA2 is the higher of the two.
JASO MB is for scooters with a CVT. It contains friction modifiers that make everything slipperier, which helps fuel economy when there is no clutch to worry about.
Put an MB oil in a geared bike with a wet clutch and the plates slip under load. You notice revs rising without matching speed, usually in the higher gears. Left alone it glazes the plates.
The reverse, an MA2 oil in a CVT scooter, is not the same kind of hazard, but you give up the efficiency the scooter was tuned around.
So the first question is not which brand. It is which family your vehicle belongs to.
Automatic scooters
Think Activa, Dio, Jupiter, Access and similar CVT scooters.
These usually ask for SAE 10W-30 with JASO MB, and they hold a small amount of oil, often around 800ml. The small sump is worth knowing: with less than a litre in there, the oil does more work per drop and ages faster than the number on a bigger bike would suggest.
Because there is no wet clutch, MB is correct here and MA2 is not what the manufacturer tuned for.
Commuters from 100cc to 125cc
Think Splendor, HF Deluxe, Glamour, Shine and similar geared commuters.
These typically ask for SAE 10W-30, API SL or above, with JASO MA2. Same viscosity as the scooters above, opposite JASO family, because these have a wet clutch.
This catches people out constantly. A 10W-30 scooter oil and a 10W-30 commuter oil look identical on the shelf and are not interchangeable. Check the JASO code, not the viscosity alone.
These engines are also tuned around the lighter grade. Going heavier in the belief that thicker means safer adds drag, costs a little fuel economy, and makes cold starts harder without buying you protection.
Bikes from 150cc to 220cc
Think Pulsar, Apache and similar.
These generally ask for a heavier grade, commonly SAE 20W-50 with JASO MA2 and API SN, holding roughly a litre. Some models and years specify 20W-40 or 10W-40 instead, which is exactly why the manual matters.
The wet clutch means JASO MA2 again.
350cc and larger singles
Think Royal Enfield 350 and similar.
These generally ask for SAE 15W-50, API SL or above, JASO MA2, semi synthetic. Long stroke singles run warm and want the heavier hot rating.

How to check any pack, whoever made it
The certifications are the checkable part. The brand name is not.
- Find the viscosity on the front and match it to your manual
- Find the JASO code and confirm it matches your vehicle’s family, MA2 for a wet clutch, MB for a CVT scooter
- Find the API grade and confirm it is at or above what the manual asks
- Treat vague wording as absent. “Suitable for bikes” is marketing. JASO MA2 is a certification.
If a pack does not print the code your manual asks for, that is your answer, regardless of how well known the name on the front is. This applies to our packs as much as anyone else’s, which is why we print each product’s grade and only the marks that batch actually holds.
What we would tell you if you asked
Two things worth saying plainly.
The right oil is the one that matches your manual, and it is frequently not the most expensive one on the shelf. Paying more for a grade your engine was not built around buys you nothing.
And the interval matters as much as the choice. A correctly specified oil left in far too long protects worse than a modest oil changed on time. We covered that in how often to change your engine oil.
